Last week we reviewed some of the top telecom stories from 2017, and with 2018 just a few days away, today seemed like the perfect time to take a sneak peek at what may lie ahead in the new year.
As part of it's 2018 preview,
FierceTelecom looked at the big topics facing telecom next year and has honed in on one in particular: dark fiber. The author, Sean Buckley, believes dark fiber will be focused on serving three audiences: wireless operators, school districts, and content providers.
"One operator that's mandating dark fiber for fronthaul and small cell backhaul is Verizon," Buckley writes. "In anticipation of its upcoming 4G and 5G deployments, Verizon is taking a multipronged fiber expansion approach: deploying its own fiber, renting facilities from a partner or purchasing regional assets like XO or WOW’s Chicago assets."
