According to a report by Ericsson, 5G service will reach more than 40 percent of the global population, with 1.5 billion subscriptions by the end of 2024--making it the fastest generation of service ever rolled out on a global scale. The report also states that 5G will take off in 2019, with networks currently being deployed in several regions.
5G is driven by high data rates, reduced latency, energy savings, massive device connectivity, and more. At its Snapdragon Tech Summit in early December, Qualcomm made several announcements regarding the company's path to commercializing 5G in the new year.
“This year’s announcements ... include collaborations with several major industry leaders that will solidify our path to 5G commercialization, and change the way we use mobile devices in 2019 and beyond, creating a truly global moment for customers and tech enthusiasts around the world,”said Qualcomm president Cristiano Amon.
AT&T is also very active in the 5G space, announcing plans to bring 5G service to at least 19 cities in early 2019.
